    Jeremy Gormly is an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) specialist. With nearly 20 years’ experience as a mediator and over 30 years as a barrister, Jeremy has an expansive practice in the dispute resolution field, ranging from litigation, to the diverse spectrum of ADR techniques available.

    As a mediator, Jeremy’s primary focus is to assist parties to a dispute to reach a mutually satisfying outcome, in the most cost effective and efficient manner. Complementing his practice as a mediator, Jeremy facilitates expert conferences (conclaves) and plays an instrumental role in advising on the management of disputes. He also sits as an arbitrator.

    He is a trained and qualified mediator through LEADR and ACDC. Having been involved in the policy and practice of ADR for nearly two decades, Jeremy has mediated hundreds of disputes in a broad range of fields, including the following.

    Jeremy has also mediated significant matters of public interest, including the HMAS Melbourne-Voyager claims. He was jointly appointed by the Hon. Warren Snowden, Minister for Defence Science and Personnel and the Hon. Robert McClelland, Attorney-General for the Commonwealth to mediate long outstanding claims from the 1964 collision of HMAS Melbourne with HMAS Voyager. All but one claim was resolved within 14 weeks.

    He has written, lectured and taught on dispute resolution. He has also had extensive public policy involvement in the role of mediation and other forms of ADR through his current and former positions at NADRAC, ADRAC, the NSW Bar Association and the ADR Industry Forum.

    Former Chairman of ADRAC

    Jeremy’s interest in ADR is evidenced by the significant positions he held as former Chair of NADRAC (National Alternative Dispute Resolution Advisory Council) and as former Chair of ADRAC (the Australian Dispute Resolution Advisory Council).

    Between 2011 and 2013, Jeremy was appointed by the Commonwealth Attorney-General as the Chair of NADRAC (the body advising the Attorney-General on the national development of ADR). During this period, NADRAC made numerous submissions to government, including examining the use of ADR clauses in contracts, publishing material regarding dispute resolution and surveying the teaching of ADR in Australian Law Schools.

    Barrister and Senior Counsel

    Complementing his mediation practice, Jeremy has maintained a significant practice as a barrister for over 30 years, and Senior Counsel for over 15 years.

    He has appeared in hundreds of trials before juries, judges, tribunals, appeal courts and possesses a wealth of experience in inquisitorial proceedings. His core areas of practice have included professional negligence, building, commercial and contractual disputes, disciplinary matters, as well as criminal and other matters.

    Jeremy’s practice also extends to specialising in inquiry work, where he has been appointed Counsel Assisting inquiries on 25 occasions over the last 22 years. He has appeared in Royal Commissions, the ICAC, Special Commissions of Inquiry, the Police Integrity Commission, the Crime and Corruption Commission of Western Australia, the Judicial Commission, numerous Inquests and many other inquiries.

    Other Roles

    Jeremy has chaired several NSW Bar Council committees, including the Professional Conduct, Common Law, ADR and Equal Opportunity committees. He has also served as a member of other Bar Committees of the NSW Bar Association and has been a member of the following boards and bodies.
